Eliquis (apixaban) is an effective anticoagulant for preventing strokes, blood clots, and treating DVT and PE. Its use must be carefully managed to avoid bleeding complications, particularly in individuals with liver or kidney impairment. Regular monitoring by a healthcare provider is essential, and patients should be vigilant for signs of bleeding.
Eliquis 5mg Film-coated Tablet contains apixaban as the active ingredient. Apixaban is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that works by inhibiting factor Xa, a key component in the blood clotting process. It is used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation, and it also helps in treating or preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
Side Effects:
Common Side Effects: Bleeding (including nosebleeds, gum bleeding, and more severe bleeding complications), bruising, dizziness, and fatigue.
Serious Side Effects: Major bleeding events (including in the brain, gastrointestinal tract, or internal bleeding), severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling), and liver problems.
Precautions:
Active Bleeding: Apixaban should not be used in individuals who have active bleeding or a history of bleeding disorders.
Liver or Kidney Issues: Caution is advised in patients with impaired liver or kidney function, as it may affect the metabolism and excretion of the drug.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Apixaban is not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. It is also not advised during breastfeeding as it can pass into breast milk.
Interaction with Other Drugs: Apixaban may interact with other anticoagulants, antifungals, and certain other medications, so all medications should be disclosed to a healthcare provider.
Uses:
Prevention of Stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE).
Prevention of recurrent DVT and PE in individuals who have been treated for an initial episode.
Benefits:
Reduces the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation.
Lower risk of bleeding compared to older anticoagulants like warfarin.
Requires less monitoring compared to warfarin, as apixaban has a more predictable effect.
The usual dose of Eliquis for most indications is 5mg twice daily.
In some cases, a reduced dose of 2.5mg twice daily may be prescribed based on factors such as age, weight, or kidney function.
Always follow the prescribed dose by your healthcare provider, as dosages can vary depending on individual medical conditions and risk factors.
